Rubbena, our lead Trainer attended the Sexpressions National Conference at Newcastle University Medical School. Here she had the opportunity to meet and learn with other people who are passionate about sex and relationship education. It is also an opportunity to hear from influential speakers within the sexual health community.
Sexpression:UK is a medical student organisation that empowers young people to make decisions about sex and relationships by running informal and comprehensive sex and relationship sessions in the community.
This year’s theme was “Sex: A new era?” and discussions covered the following:
- Living with HIV
- Sex in commerce, culture and everyday life
- Sex education in the UK
- Sex education in countries with severe restrictions on freedom of expression
Rubbena led a workshop on the challenge of delivering Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) to deaf pupils. She was the only presenter sharing good practice in the arena of deafness and disability.
It was clear from the quiz she ran that the attendees did not know about the needs of the deaf community nor how these could and should be met when it comes to sexual health.
Deafax is keen to work with Sexpressions and other groups to equip them with the skills and knowledge to actively support the deaf people they come into contact with. If you would like to know more, or get into contact with us, email us today!
